These areas along the northern coast of Peru are famous for their pre-Incan cultures, such as the bloody Moche, and their successors, the Chimu.

| The Moche god "Aicpaec" (the Decapitator). Apparently, he was rarely happy. This relief work, about 2,000 years old, uses minerals rather than paint to color the adobe clay. It is found within the newly excavated Temple of the Moon, near Trujillo. |

A Peruvian dog. This special breed existed in pre-Incan
times. The hairless canine is known for its unusually hot skin. The animal was often used as a bed-warmer.
